Civil War tale selected for Greene County Reads

Sisters of ShilohGreene County Reads, the annual county-wide book discussion, will be held Thursday, April 7. This year’s selection is Sisters of Shiloh by Kathy and Becky Hepinstall.

Sisters of Shiloh is historical fiction set in North Carolina during the Civil War. The story is of two sisters who disguise themselves as men to enlist in the Confederate Army.

Libby, the younger sister, lost her husband in the Battle of Antietam and swears vengeance on the Yankees. Josephine, the older sister, joins the army in order to protect her sister. While in the army, Josephine starts to fall in love with one of the other soldiers while Libby becomes more delusional with each battle fought.

Anyone who would like to participate is encouraged to check out a copy of the book from any of the six public libraries in Greene County and then attend one of the book discussions on Thursday, April 7 at the place and time that is most convenient.

Discussions will be held at Grand Junction public library at 9 am, the Paton public library at 2 pm, or the Jefferson public library at 7 pm. All discussions will be led by Jan Scharingson, retired East Greene high school English teacher.

“Civil War era books are big in the publishing world right now. This novel is not about strategy and battles but about the human side of being a soldier as told by two young women. It is a short book but full of content and will be good for discussion,” said Scharingson.

The annual book discussions are free and open to the public. They are a cooperative project of the Greene County libraries, made possible by funding support from the Greene County board of supervisors. Light refreshments will be served.

Persons who want more information can call their local public library.
